SPOUSAL SPONSORSHIP FROM INSIDE AND OUTSIDE CANADA: BRINGING LOVED ONES CLOSER

REUNITING FAMILIES IN CANADA

The IRCC Spousal Sponsorship program stands as a heartwarming initiative aimed at reuniting couples by providing eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents with the opportunity to sponsor their spouse or common-law partner for immigration to Canada. This program presents two primary pathways.

As of the end of July 2023, Canada welcomed 50,015 new permanent residents through the spousal sponsorship immigration program, marking an impressive 21.6% increase compared to the 41,145 arrivals in the same period of 2022. This surge in numbers highlights the growing popularity and success of the spousal sponsorship program, reaffirming Canada’s commitment to reuniting families and embracing diversity

INLAND SPONSORSHIP:

A PATH TO REUNION FOR THOSE ALREADY IN CANADA

Inland Sponsorship is tailored for couples where both partners are currently residing in Canada. In this process, the sponsored spouse or partner can apply for an open work permit to stay in Canada while their application is under review.

WHO CAN BE A SPONSOR AND APPLY FOR INLAND SPONSORSHIP?

To be eligible for Inland Sponsorship, sponsors must meet specific criteria:

  • The sponsor must be at least 18 years old.
  • The sponsor must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada under the Canadian Indian Act.
  • The sponsor must demonstrate that they are not receiving social assistance for reasons other than a disability.
  • The sponsor must have the means to provide for the basic needs of the persons they wish to sponsor.

OUTLAND SPONSORSHIP:

REUNITING LOVED ONES ACROSS BORDERS

Outland Sponsorship, on the other hand, is designed for couples where the sponsored spouse or partner resides outside of Canada. Sponsors must meet particular financial and other requirements, and the application process involves a thorough assessment to ensure the authenticity of the relationship. Successful applicants are allowed to reunite with their loved ones in Canada, promoting family reunification.

WHO CAN BE A SPONSOR AND APPLY FOR OUTLAND SPONSORSHIP?

For Outland Sponsorship, sponsors must meet these criteria:

  • The sponsor must be at least 18 years old.
  • The sponsor must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person registered in Canada under the Canadian Indian Act.
  • If a Canadian citizen residing outside of Canada, demonstrates plans to live in Canada when the sponsored persons become permanent residents.

INCOME REQUIREMENTS: HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?

(DO YOU MEET THE LOW-INCOME CUT-OFF (LICO) LEVEL)

In most cases, there isn’t an income requirement to sponsor your spouse, partner, or dependent child. The need to demonstrate income adequacy arises when sponsoring:

A dependent child who has one or more dependent children of their own, or

A spouse or partner with a dependent child, where the dependent child has one or more children of their own.
