Extend Your Visitor Visa In Canada
REUNITING FAMILIES IN CANADA
A visitor visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is an official document permitting foreign individuals to travel to and enter Canada. Except for citizens from visa-exempt nations, having a visitor visa is necessary for entry into Canada, regardless of whether the purpose is for studies, temporary work, or leisure visits.

VISITOR VISA
When you get to Canada’s entry point, an officer from CBSA usually stamps your passport and sets the date for when you should leave. Because of COVID-19, officers aren’t stamping passports but are using an electronic system to note your arrival time, how long you can stay, and any rules for your visit. Sometimes, you might want to stay longer or change your visit terms. To do any of these:
Apply 30 days before your status ends to:
- Extend your stay as a visitor, student, or worker.
- Switch your permit type (like changing from Visitor to studying or working).
- Modify a permit condition (such as changing schools or jobs).
How long a Visitor can Stay?
Normally, visitors can stay in Canada upto six months. The officer usually stamps the passport and writes the date when you’re allowed to stay. However, if the officer has doubts about your reasons for visiting (like no return ticket or unclear plans), they might permit a stay for less than six months.
It’s crucial to apply for an extension before your visit status expires. IRCC generally recommends doing so 30 days ahead.
Who requires Status Restoration?
If a visitor, worker, or student has lost their legal status, they can request to regain it following the guidelines in R182 of IRPR. This rule only applies if they haven’t been without status for over 90 days and have adhered to the specified conditions. Restoring status isn’t possible at the entry point. Those who haven’t met the conditions under R185 must apply within Canada to restore their status. If they leave Canada, their return will be seen as seeking a new entry. While waiting for the status restoration application’s decision, individuals can stay in Canada but can’t work or study. They regain these rights upon approval of the application.
