What is the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) Program?

The PSR program is a remarkable opportunity for private groups and organizations to sponsor eligible refugees who are currently living abroad. As a private sponsor, your role is not just about offering a lifeline but about changing lives. You’ll provide vital support for a refugee throughout the sponsorship period, which typically spans up to 1 year.

How You Can Make a Difference

When you decide to sponsor a refugee, you’re offering more than just a fresh start. You’re extending a hand to individuals and families who have faced unimaginable challenges, offering them a new beginning filled with hope and promise. Here’s how you can make a difference:

  • Start-up Costs: Private sponsors assist with initial expenses such as furniture and clothing, ensuring that refugees can establish a comfortable and welcoming home in Canada.

  • Monthly Support: You’ll continue to provide monthly financial support to cover basic necessities, including housing, food, and public transportation. This ongoing assistance is the foundation for their successful resettlement.

  • Social and Emotional Support: Beyond financial aid, sponsors offer invaluable social and emotional support to help refugees integrate into their new community, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.

Who Can Sponsor a Refugee?

Sponsorship is a collective effort, and you cannot do it alone. To be part of this life-changing journey, you must belong to one of the following groups in Canada:

  • Sponsorship Agreement Holders (SAH): SAHs enter into agreements with the Government of Canada to support refugees as they arrive in the country.

  • Constituent Groups: These groups collaborate with SAHs to sponsor refugees under the SAH’s agreement, reinforcing the impact of collective sponsorship.

  • Groups of Five: Comprising five or more Canadian citizens or permanent residents, these groups sponsor refugees, facilitating their settlement in local communities.

  • Community Sponsors: Organizations, associations, or corporations with a deep commitment to making a difference can sponsor refugees and play a vital role in their successful resettlement

Supporting Refugees with Unique Needs

For refugees who may have specific needs, the Joint Assistance Sponsorship (JAS) Program is a lifeline that offers essential assistance. It’s important to recognize that eligibility for sponsorship through the JAS program is limited to SAHs and their Constituent Groups.

Extending a Helping Hand: In the JAS program, sponsors are committed to providing support for refugees for up to 24 months, ensuring their specialized requirements are met over an extended period.

Enhancing Financial Aid: The Government of Canada steps in to provide financial assistance, bolstering your support and making a significant difference in the lives of refugees with unique needs
